Many of us find fascination in looking at a plastic surgery photo. This could be because we see an attempt at defying the natural order and appearance of things when looking at before-and-after surgery photos. Some of these we love, and others would give us nightmares. And that is because each of us has a preconceived notion of what makes for beauty, and we use it to gauge how successful or “faulty” the operation went.
The photos we stumble upon on the internet would usually point at two completely different conclusions – successful, if we think the alteration improved the person’s looks compared to photos taken before the operation; and faulty or botched, if we find that it did not.
The one thing that happens for real, though, is that the mind of the one looking at the photo decides and judges according to that particular person’s own standard of beauty. It’s like the age-old quip “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
With this kind of presumption, we unfairly tag a person’s surgery as “failed” by a very arguable standard. At best, notions on beauty and aesthetics are more like conventions and patterns that people follow – but even this is arguable.
Take for instance a procedure for removing a mole. The assumption is that the mole is unwanted and “ugly.” Some other cultures, however, would think that that mole is rather sexy and appealing. So, who’s right? Whose opinion counts? Here, we go basic and say everyone is entitled to an opinion – and there is no problem with that.
The problem lies in that each time we judge a plastic surgery photo as a total failure, we lump together everything involved in that operation as “failure,” which is clearly a bad assessment, when one thinks about the successes and advancements made in the field of cosmetic surgery, and the efforts made by the doctors who succeeded in executing what they were only told to do, in the first place.
