When looking at a plastic surgery photo, we usually would have several thoughts going through our heads. More often, we’d want to look at more and more photos of the same person, perhaps to get a good appraisal of the cosmetic enhancements done. We’d compare photos taken before and after the surgery to really see what has changed, and if such a change made a turn for the better, or for the worse.
And these are visible changes we’re looking for. The plastic surgery photo captured would certainly show that. And while looking at these photos, we forget about the one essential difference between before and after photos – time.
We usually have a compressed timetable when looking at these photos. Before and after, yes, certainly refers to the change the surgical procedure occasioned. The question is… “how long after” are we talking about?
If we factor in this time difference, we’d probably get at a more “levelled” appreciation of the procedures done on a person. But we do not do this because, in our minds, the reason for one getting a plastic surgery, in the first place, is to defy time… to freeze time and look youthful and fresh (forever?). Of course, that will never happen.
The body degenerates with time. Muscles will sag, and some body parts will inevitably get bloated. And this is why we can never seem to find “successful” breast implants and lifts. We are dealing with two definite forces here – gravity AND time. One is bad enough as the case is, how much more with two? This makes perfect sense, right?
So, the next time we look at surgery photos, let’s hold back a little and stop assessing failure and success merits like they’re all the doctors’ faults. The field of medicine and medical studies have gone really far in improving life as we know it (in this case, improving looks). Sadly, though, it has still to find a fix for both gravity and time.
